Game Design
Following a brief set by Ubisoft, we began development of this game as part of a professional project module for my university. We iterated through several ideas and realised we had to drastically reduce our scope for the timeframe we were allotted, which let us to settle on this final shape of the game.
My notion was that the game could follow an 80/20 split, the first 80% of the game being PvE focused and the last 20% being PvP focused. The player, equipped with a versatile pickaxe, would encounter enemies exploring down the levels that challenged them to think creatively about how to use the environment to best defeat them. This would be done through the throw / recall mechanic of the pickaxe as (initially) the idea was that one enemy type would only be able to be damaged from behind, meaning the recall of the axe would be the best way to defeat said enemy type.
The final sprint would come after the one of the players would retrieve the artifact at the bottom of the mines as both players would be drawn into conflict so that they might steal the artifact off each other and ultimately win the game.
Audio Design
Upon guidance provided by Ubisoft I learned quickly how to best utilise Unreal Engine’s sound system. I spent a lot of time within the Metasound system in order to quickly understand how to add sound effects where I needed to without breaking up the flow of the main programmers. Unreal’s Metasounds worked effectively for what I wanted to do, and given enough time I felt I could’ve grown very confident with it as I am with Wwise and Unity’s systems.
Yet again this was another area where I had to create music I was otherwise inexperienced in, namely powerful chants and fantasy music akin to Lord of the Rings.
