Football Reminiscence
A collection of VR experiences for people living with dementia.
Aiming to replicate the match day experience of mid-20th century Scottish Football, the goal of this project is to facilitate reminiscence for elderly people living with dementia.
Created to commemorate the 150th anniversary of football in Scotland.
Developed in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Scotland, the Digital Health and Care Innovation Centre (DHI), the Scottish Football Museum, and Abertay University.
Co-designed by Alzheimer’s Scotland reminiscence groups and staff.
Work Conducted
Game Design
There was very little in the way of mechanics for this project as the ultimate goal was to have this be a simple, easy-going experience that would allow the user to be comfortably immersed rather than overwhelmed. To that end we did a lot of research into what the average experience of a football stadium during the 60s was like in order to capture snapshots that we would then recreate.
We also added in simple interactables to make the environment feel more alive and real, as opposed to a stilted painting you could only look at.
Audio Design
This was going to be a key component of how effective this experience was going to be since, as many would tell you, going to a football stadium to watch a match is feast for the senses. The roars, shouts and chants is what helps bind the community together, and is what leaves a lasting impression after the match is ended.
This was an area I had to get especially creative in as trying to source audio of incredibly large crowds to create a single cohesive experience with limited resources was not an easy task, however having become better much better acquainted with different audio processing tools inside and outside of Wwise meant that the goal I had set felt more than achievable.
